Every person in their life ever have a skin problems and most of these conditions caused by stress and mind. Science has now developed investigation the correlation between skin and stress.
“For decades doctors from the American Academy of Dermatology says that stress is not a factor in acne. In fact, since the longer we know that acne often appears when we’re longing lover,” said Ted Grossbart, PhD, professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School.
Now, some skin experts began to see skin problems holistically and try to psychological healing techniques through hypnosis, meditation, and counseling to cure skin issues and preserving healthy skin.
“Studies show that 30-60 percent of patients who went to the doctor for his skin problems have emotional problems. The problem is caused by stress not only triggers the skin disorder, but also make medical drugs become useless,” said Grossbart who has written books Skin Deep: A New Mind / Body Program for Healthy Skin.
Skin problem which is closely related to emotional state is known as psoriasis. This disease will cause patches of skin accompanied by pain. Psoriasis is a disease to survive and can appear suddenly, especially if the patient was experiencing emotional stress.
Experts known that the skin is very closely related to the brain and nervous system, which is one of its tasks is to manage stress. “The skin and brain have a lot of interconnections. Skin has a lot of nerves and tissues associated with the vascular system,” says Amy Wechsler, MD, a dermatologist and psychiatrist.
She added that the chemicals produced by the brain to respond to stress will wander down to the skin. Emotional imbalances caused by stress due to the demands of work, romance issues, to finance, can cause interference with a chemical called neuropeptides that will cause disruption in the skin.
It can trigger inflammation, widen blood vessels, or to increase production of oil glands that eventually will cause problems in skin. “Acne, psoriasis, wrinkles, or dark circles around the eyes will get worse when we are stressed or lack of sleep,” said Wechsler who is also the author of The Mind-Beauty Connection.
Research in the year 2007 to show students, 23 percent of respondents claimed to often arise acne during exam season. Meanwhile, a 2002 study done by researchers from the UK found that psoriasis patients improved after they followed a cognitive-behavioral therapy.
Body and mind relaxation methods, such as meditation, yoga and tai chi, would significantly reduce the circulation of neuropeptides. “Managing emotions and thoughts will make the skin more tolerant of a variety of suffering, such as allergens, irritants, or cosmetics,” says Richard Fried, MD, PhD, an expert in dermatology and director of the Acne and Rosacea Society.
