Exercise in Green Environments Improves Quality of Life

Exercising five minutes in parks or gardens brings substantial benefits to your mental health, according to new research in the UK. These findings add to evidence that the combination between sports and nature activities can improve the quality of life.


Researchers of The University of Essex indicated that five minutes physical activity in green environments and open land, like walking, gardening, cycling, or planting trees can boost morale and self-esteem. “We believe that there will be many potential benefits for individuals, communities and for health care costs; if people do self-treatment with more exercise in green areas,” said Jo Barton, one of the research leader. Other studies show that exercising in the open field can reduce the risk of mental illness and increase health


Barton and his team examined data 1252 of people with mental health status, gender, and age are different. This data is derived from 10 studies in the UK. They analyze the activities such as walking, gardening, cycling, fishing, canoeing, horseback riding and planting trees. The study shows, most significant health improvements occur in young people and people suffering from mental illness, although people of all ages and social groups also enjoy the benefits.


The greatest positive impact on self-esteem emerged from a five-minute session of “exercise in green surroundings”. Researchers say that green surroundings are refer to the natural environments, including small town park and big park. Green environments with water resources seem to have greater benefits.
